TAIPING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Umno is a dynamic party that is capable of adapting and transforming according to the new environment.
Najib, who is also the Umno president, said that despite being 68 years old, the party was still relevant, outstanding and strong.
“Umno’s strength was proven in the last general election when the (parliamentary) seats won by Umno increased to 88. The DAP, PAS and PKR only won 89 seats but Umno alone could win 88 seats,” he said in his speech at the official opening of the Taiping Umno House here yesterday.
As a party that had been established for a long time, Najib said Umno was also not free from challenges and problems.
“We must realise that the process of rejuvenation, improvement and soul-searching must be carried out all the time so that Umno will remain relevant,” he said.
Najib said the principles of Umno’s struggles and idealism placed importance on race, religion and nation which had never wavered since its inception.
On the Taiping Umno House, Najib said he hoped the building, which the party had dreamed of for the past 40 years, would be put to good use to strengthen esprit de corps among members in line with the name given, that is, “Umno House”.
He wanted the four-storey building located at Jalan Kota here to be used not only as an Umno office but also to become a place for the exchange of ideas.
Najib hoped the new building would inspire party members to ensure Umno’s success in future.
Also present at the event were Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and Taiping Umno division head Datuk Ahmad Shalimin Ahmad Shaffie. — Bernama
