Oath keeper: Lee being sworn in as senator at Parliament House as Chong (seated) looks on.
KUALA LUMPUR: Newly appointed senator MCA vice-president Datuk Lee Chee Leong wants to bring up more Chinese issues in the Dewan Negara.
The former deputy minister said his appointment offered him the best platform for him to fight for Chinese issues and serve the rakyat.
“This is the best platform for me to raise the voice of the Chinese community and include them in national development. I will also use the platform to give my service to all Malaysians,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby here yesterday.
Lee was among three leaders sworn in as senators before Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang at Parliament House.
Lee, 57, who served as Deputy Foreign Minister (2009-2010) and Deputy Home Minister (2010-2013), graduated from Bristol Polytechnic in England in Accounting and Finance.
In the 2008 general election, Lee won the Kampar parliamentary seat. He secured 20,126 votes to defeat Keong Ming Sing of the DAP with a majority of 2,697.
The other two new senators are MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon, 40, and Jempol Umno division chief Datuk Mohd Salim Shariff. The three were appointed for their first three-year term beginning yesterday
Chong said he would use the platform to raise issues affecting the younger generation and give his ideas on how to handle social problems among the youth.
“This is something new to me although I am familiar with Parliament as I had previously assisted (then MCA president) Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat,” he said.
He hoped that his appointment would give a bigger voice to youth and change the perception that MCA was “an old and traditional party”.
“This will give an opportunity for younger leaders to air their views and help solve the problems of youth. I will also team up with Mohd Salim to highlight local problems in Negri Sembilan,” Chong said.
