PETALING JAYA: Christians throughout the country marked Easter with prayers for peace and harmony, and by sparing a thought for the less privileged and unfortunate.
Huge congregations packed churches to attend the Easter Sunday Mass yesterday, which is typically the largest Sunday service of the year for Christians as it marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after his crucifixion.
Extra chairs were placed outside churches to accommodate the huge crowd, with many churches also placing TV screens outside to broadcast the Mass.
The Church of St Thomas More in USJ was fully packed with parishioners listening intently as parish priest Rev Father Simon Labrooy called for reconciliation and unity among the congregation.
He also offered special prayers for the passengers and relatives of those aboard missing Flight MH370 and for those who perished in the South Korean ferry tragedy.
Over at the St Ignatius Church in Kelana Jaya, about 1,000 parishioners gathered for the morning Mass led by Rev Father Lucas Ng.
The choir sang the Gloria and Hallelujah spiritedly while parishioners received Holy Communion.
Parishioner Andrew Su Meng Kit , 43, said he prayed for the country and for Malaysians to be peaceful, prosperous and united.
“With so many uneventful occasions at the early part of the year, I pray that Malaysians will be more patient and tolerant,’’ he added.
In Malacca, Easter was more lively at the Portuguese Settlement where families gathered for “reunion” meals at their homes.
Community activist Joseph Sta Maria said the Portuguese community also shared the spirit of Easter with non-Catholics.
“The state government should cash in on Easter as a religious tourism product because many want to feel it in a traditional style,” he said.
In Kota Kinabalu, churches turned dark on Saturday as Christians lighted candles to commemorate the Easter Vigil Mass.
