KOTA KINABALU: Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pic) said statements have been taken from 260 individuals to assist in police investigations in connection with missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370.
He said investigations were still being conducted and many more people would be called up to give their statements.
“I am sorry because I cannot give you anything on the recovery of the plane so far. First, because it is related to a criminal investigation. Secondly, when we say something, people will resort to speculation. So, it is best we continue our investigations until we are ready to make announcements to the public,” he said.
Khalid was speaking to reporters after attending a pinning-of-the-rank ceremony of the Police Volunteer Reserve (PVR) Unit here Sunday where police volunteer Paul Lajumin was promoted to the rank of Superintendent.
He said investigations into the missing plane had been classified as a criminal case under Section 130 (c) under Penal Code which covered investigations into any elements of sabotage, hijacking and so on.
However, Khalid said at present, the main focus was on finding the plane.
In a separate development, Khalid confirmed the detention of a Malaysian military officer by the United States authorities on suspicion of trying to smuggle a pistol out from the country.
“What I can say here is that he (the officer concerned) has to face the United States’ laws. However, we are interested to know his intentions and reason for attempting to smuggle the Taurus PT-22 pistol. That will be later. We will have to get the full report from the US,” he said.
Local media had reported today that the officer, a major, had been detained by the San Angelo authorities in Texas after a pistol was found in his bag.
On the PVR, Khalid said to date, there were about 16,000 members including 1,618 in Sabah.
