SANDAKAN: A newborn baby was left on the roof of a double storey terrace house belonging to a retired civil servant in Taman Merpati off Mile 7 Jalan Airport late Saturday night.
The 59-year-old retired civil servant and his wife were asleep in their room on the first floor while two of their children and three grandchildren were on the lower floor.
He was awoken by the sounds of a baby crying at about 11.15pm and went to check. He opened the window of the adjacent room and noticed the cry was from a package on the house roof above.
When the crying stopped, he decided to seek the assistance of a relative staying in the neighbourhood.
Together they checked the package and found a baby boy with its umbilical cord still intact inside.
The police sent the baby to the Duchess of Kent Hospital for medical examination and placed temporary under the care of the hospital.
Sandakan police chief Asst Comm Rowell Marong said police were investigating the case and are appealing to members of the public with information to come forward to assist.
