PETALING JAYA: The car in which DAP veteran Karpal Singh, 74, was travelling in collided into the side of a five-tonne lorry on the North South Expressway, police confirmed.

Bukit Aman traffic chief Senior Asst Comm Mohd Fuad Abdul Latiff said the left side of the car hit the right side of the lorry which was travelling in the same direction.

"Initial investigations revealed that the Toyota Alphard hit the right side of a lorry which was travelling on the left lane," he said.

He said the impact of the crash killed Karpal and his aide, C Michael, on the spot.

SAC Mohd Fuad said others in the car included Karpal's son, Ramkarpal, and the driver, both of whom were injured.

"Road conditions at the time of the accident were normal and no rain was reported in the area.

"The cause of the accident is under investigation," he said.

Karpal's 38-year-old son, RamKarpal, and the driver, C. Selvam, were slightly injured in the accident.

According to police, an Indonesian domestic helper of Karpal, whose identity has yet to be established, was injured and in critical condition.

Police identified the lorry driver as Abu Mansor Mohd, 45, with two passengers known as Nur Azlina Ahmad, 23, and Nunrieman Diana Qhaleesha Abdullah, four. All three were not injured.

According to the report the lorry was transporting cement, steel and tiles heading north towards Ipoh.

Both vehicles were travelling on a hilly slope of the highway when the accident occurred.
