SEPANG: A team of officials from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) are scheduled to arrive here tomorrow (Monday) to evaluate the safety of KL International Airport 2 (KLIA2).
The decision to call in ICAO was made following AirAsia’s dissatisfaction with structural issues, particularly depressions on the apron and runway.
Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the Cabinet had been briefed on the evaluation to be done by ICAO.
“I informed the Cabinet that the ICAO would look at it as some quarters are still being bugged by safety issues.
“After this, we don’t know how else we can prove to the public that the airport is safe,” he said after witnessing KLIA2’s operational readiness and airport transfer yesterday.
The airport, built for low cost carriers, was scheduled to be officially opened on May 2 while the existing LCCT would be closed on May 9.
However, AirAsia and AirAsia X, the low-cost, long haul affiliate carrier of the AirAsia Group, said it would not budge from LCCT until all safety and security issues were resolved.
This is despite the confirmation from Ikram Premier Consulting Sdn Bhd that the runway, apron, tarmac and buildings were safe for use.
Hishammuddin said AirAsia would have to consult ICAO if it was not satisfied with the evaluation.
He said the airline would have to make its own decision on its operation at the LCCT after it is closed.
“My priority is to get KLIA2 up and running, and when it is up and running, ensure it is safe.
“If AirAsia does not move in, let the people judge them. I do not want individuals with agendas or those who have got personals issues to jeopardise something that all Malaysians should be proud of.
“There are weaknesses that we will overcome and there are independent investigators looking into the safety issues. But these should not stop us from feeling good about something that we have achieved,” added Hishammuddin.
