PETALING JAYA: Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) has continuously acted to resolve public complaints, saying there are fewer grouses related to water rationing now than during the beginning of the exercise.
Syabas corporate communications assistant general manager Priscilla Alfred said that in the beginning, those living on higher ground, high-rise buildings and multi-storey buildings had faced delays in supply but fewer of such cases were being reported these days.
She said on days when supply is resumed, downstream distributions systems would be thoroughly checked for water pressure, air locks in the pipeline and other factors that might cause disruption.
“If there are delays while the issues are rectified, water tankers will be sent to provide emergency relief.
“Delays lasting more than two days, as sometimes reported in the media, were actually due to some other causes such as burst pipes or pump house failures.
“For such cases, Syabas would immediately engage contractors to do repair work,” she added.
Asked to comment on the continued lack of supply at several apartment blocks in Flora Damansara, she said for high-rise premises, Syabas had to get cooperation from the building’s joint management committee (JMC) or the managers to ensure the water level in the roof tanks was stabilised before opening the outlet for the residents.
“Under the law, Syabas cannot interfere with the internal piping of premises that use bulk meters such as high-rise buildings.
“In this case, we tried to contact the JMC of Flora Damansara for the past two days but they failed to respond,” she added.
She said the disruption could have been caused by internal piping problems.
On allegations that Syabas had not conducted water rationing in affluent neighbourhoods, Alfred said the areas selected for rationing were based on technical considerations of the distribution system and the economic status of areas.
“This is with the exception of those expressly excluded by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), which are the centre of administration for Federal Government of Malaysia (Putrajaya), the centre of administration for the Selangor state government (Shah Alam), Kuala Lumpur City Centre, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Subang airport, the Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ), free trading zones, government and private hospitals and dialysis centres,” she said.
She said all the areas were presented to SPAN before the approval of the rationing plan.
