Shafee can act for ROS, lawyers say

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah should not be stopped from representing the Registrar of Societies (ROS) in the suit brought against it, said Bar Council president Christopher Leong.

“I do not think he is disqualified from representing the ROS just because he is closely connected with Umno or had previously advised Umno. A lawyer acts in his or her professional capacity when they are engaged by a client. I believe the Havana Declaration and the UN Guiding Principles on Justice provides that a lawyer should not be identified by their cause,” said Leong.
