DATUK Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, who was heavily criticised for his controversial remark implying that non-Malays were less sensitive about statutory rape, has asked Parliament to have it expunged from the Hansard.
The Deputy Home Minister said his statement could cause hurt if one read it “out of context” but stressed he had no ill intention when he read it out.
“If you read the sentence on its own and take it out of context, it could be deemed offensive but there in no way had I any ill intention when I read it out.
“I am not a racist, my wife is Chinese. There is no way that I had intended to speak (in a racist) manner,” said Wan Junaidi.
He, however, did not apologise for his statement but requested that his statement be expunged.
The Santubong MP added: “If you want me to apologise, I do not want to.
“But if it is asked for the sentence to be expunged from the Hansard, I agree if that is what is asked of me,” he said.
Last week, Chong Chien Jen (DAP - Bandar Kuching) wanted to refer Wan Junaidi to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee for his statement.
Chong then said he accepted Wan Junaidi’s explanation.
“I know you are not a racist but let this be a lesson for everybody to not make any baseless conclusions,” Chong said.
Wan Junaidi was criticised after telling Parliament last week that there were more reports of statutory rape by Malays because the community was more sensitive when it came to premarital sex and children born out of wedlock.
He also said that the non-Malays were perhaps ‘less sensitive’ when it came to such issues.
“This does not mean there were more Malays involved in underage rape cases but that Malay Muslims are more sensitive when it comes to these issues,” Wan Junaidi had said.
