PETALING JAYA: Batu MP Tian Chua has been slammed by netizens over a comment made shortly after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak announced late Monday that the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 had crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.
The PKR vice-president tweeted at 10.25pm: "PM made a statement on MH370 at 10pm while parliament was still in session. Wonder why can't he follow Aust PM reporting dvpt in parliament" - a tweet that drew much condemnation from Twitter users such as @KhabirM.
"Your incessant politicizing of nearly everything, even in a time of sadness, even in the time of grief, is why people hate you," said @KhabirM.
@KhabirM was one of many Twitter users who ticked off Tian Chua for attempting to politicise the issue.
"This information is for all Malaysians. We don't care if parliament was in sitting, because we are more concern about MH370," said @Kevinfernandez.
Another Twitter user, @Haziq_F added, "Is not only a wakil rakyat interest.its the RAKYAT interest. RAKYAT I repeat. Dont be a selfish politician."
Other Twitter users had more sarcastic responses to Tian Chua's tweet, such as @jasmeenz, who tweeted "Group hug again, all Malaysians, except for @tianchua" and @commentmaniac who parodied the acronym SAR, which had been used frequently in the media to refer to search and rescue efforts to find MH370.
"Shut up And Resign (SAR) tian chua," said @commentmaniac.
Meanwhile, Gerakan leader Tan Keng Liang also took to Twitter to slam Tian Chua for his comment, tweeting "can you feel grief" and re-tweeting his comment.
He added in a later tweet, noticing people tagging him into their criticisms, "pls don't tag my name beside @tianchua ...don't associate me with this PKR MP. Shameful!"
Aside from Tan, MIC strategic director Datuk Seri S. Vell Paari also took Tian Chua to task for his comment.
"@tianchua what's wrong with you. Did the Dr drop you on your head when you were born," said Vell Paari.
At 10pm Monday, Najib announced that British investigators from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) had confirmed that the flight of Malaysian Airlines MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.
"This evening, I was briefed by representatives of the AAIB. They informed me that Inmarsat, the UK company that provided the satellite data, has performed further calculations on the data, and has been able to shed more light on MH370's flight path.
"Based on the analysis, Inmarsat and the AAIB flew along the southern corridor and its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean west of Perth," said Najib at a press conference at Putra World Trade Center.
MH370, which had been missing for the last 17 days, disappeared from Malaysian radars at 2.15am on March 8 after taking off from Kuala Lumpur International Airport for Beijing at 12.30am. It carried 239 passengers and crew.
