KUALA LUMPUR: MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has questioned the sincerity of Pakatan Rakyat candidate Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in standing in the Kajang by-election.
“If Wan Azizah is elected in Kajang, will she resign once again as she did in Permatang Pauh before?
“Now, she is back. This cannot continue to happen and the people know the tricks by Pakatan Rakyat,” Liow told reporters after meeting representatives from the Kesatuan Kebangsaan Guru-Guru Besar Malaysia here yesterday.
Dr Wan Azizah had stood in for her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency in the 1999, 2004 and 2008 general elections.
However, she stepped down after the 2008 polls so that the Opposition Leader could contest the seat via a by-election.
Before Dr Wan Azizah was picked as candidate for the Kajang by-election - which came about following the resignation of its PKR representative and Anwar had announced he was contesting for the seat.
People in Kajang, Liow said, should set a high standard of democracy and not be manipulated by Anwar or Pakatan Rakyat.
“They should not allow Pakatan to do what and when they please. For Pakatan, the people in Kajang do not matter.
“Win or lose, there is no difference for them because Selangor is already under their leadership.
“For us in Barisan Nasional however, this win is a big deal because it means that the people in Kajang have chosen a dedicated (state assemblyman),” said Liow.
By choosing Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, Kajang voters would have an assemblyman who had the support of the Federal Government to help and solve outstanding issues.
Meanwhile, Chew called on her opponent to restrain from personal attacks and misleading statements after several Barisan banners and flags were removed in the constituency.
These were taken down after certain people insisted that the party’s election publicity materials should not bear the 1Malaysia logo.
Chew said some banners claiming that “a vote for MCA equalled a vote to Umno and Perkasa” had also been put up in Chinese majority areas in the constituency.
“Some also called for Malay votes for a Malay candidate in the kampung. They are playing the racial card.
“They fail to do what they preach and are contradicting their so-called struggle for racial harmony,” she said after visiting residents of Desa Mutiara flats, where the roof had been badly damaged for decades.
