PUTRAJAYA: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim turned up 90 minutes late at the Court of Appeal registry to sign his bail papers.
Anwar, 67, also filed an appeal against his sodomy conviction by the Court of Appeal on Friday and his sentencing of five years in jail.
Anwar had come to the court’s registry at 12.30pm after attending the King’s Royal Address at the opening of the second session of the 13th Parliament in Kuala Lumpur.
Deputy registrar (criminal division) Darmafikri Abu Adam finalised the bail process in chambers.
Anwar later told reporters that “he had come straight from the Parliament”.
“I was not on bail from 11am to 12.30pm,” he said jokingly.
Although Court of Appeal judge Justice Balia Yusof Wahi granted Anwar a stay of execution pending an appeal, he had ordered him to post his bail by 11am.
Anwar’s co-counsel Ramkarpal Singh said his client posted the RM10,000 bail in one surety without having any problem.
PKR chief of staff Ibrahim Yaacob, added Ramkarpal, had acted as Anwar’s bailor.
Ramkarpal said he had also filed a notice of appeal against the appellate court’s ruling and served a copy to the Federal Court.
Anwar was acquitted by the High Court on Jan 9, 2012 for allegedly sodomising Mohd Saiful Azlan, his former aide, at Desa Damansara Condominium in Bukit Damansara on June 26, 2008.
Trial judge Justice Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah had ruled that the court could not be 100% certain, after going through the evidence, that the integrity of the DNA samples had not been compromised.
In his ruling, Justice Balia, who chaired a three-man panel, held that the trial judge had misdirected in his finding that the integrity of the DNA samples had been compromised.
