JOHOR BARU: The Star’s Johor bureau has won four awards at the third Johor Media Awards event.
Bureau chief Nelson Benjamin, journalist Zazali Musa and photographer Abdul Rahman Embong were the prize winners. Nelson and Abdul Rahman, who came out tops in the “Best Development News” and “Best Human Interest Photograph” categories respectively, won RM2,000 each while Zazali took a total of RM4,000 under the “Best Economic News” and “Best Feature Article” categories.
The Star’s retired senior writer Hamdan Raja Abdullah received a special memento at the event on Wednesday night for his media contributions in Johor.
“This is a testimony of the team’s hard work in producing good and relevant news reports,” Benjamin said, adding that he was proud that all members of the bureau were nominated in all five categories.
He said it was the third consecutive year that the Johor bureau had clinched most of the awards in the English media category.
A total of 295 entries were received for the various categories.
In his speech, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin said it was important that the state government and media worked closely together to disseminate news to the people.
“Although there are various online news portals, readers will still look for accurate reports,” he said before presenting the awards.
