KAJANG: MCA wants the Selangor government to act fast to ensure that there is enough water supply for the people. Party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the relevant infrastructure for water treatment should be put up quickly because the people were suffering from water shortage and rationing.
“Enough water supply is our main concern now,” he said, adding that any decision, such as on tariffs, should be made with the people’s interest in mind.
“The Federal Government saw the water shortage coming in 2008 but the Selangor government did not take action,” Liow said after chairing the MCA presidential council meeting yesterday. “Now the people have to put up with water rationing.”
On Feb 26, Putrajaya and Selangor signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the restructuring of the water industry in Selangor, which included the construction of the Langat 2 water treatment plant.
With the MoU, the Federal Government has agreed to take over Selangor’s water assets. It will pay RM9.65bil to the four water concessionaries as compensation.
It also agreed to allow the state government to manage the water supply through Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Bhd, a wholly-owned state company. Selangor, in return, agreed to issue a development order for the construction of the Langat 2 water treatment plant and its distribution system.
