PUTRAJAYA: People living in urban areas will have their own version of the Village Security and Development Committee to look after their welfare from May.
Known as the Residents’ Representative Committees (Jawatankuasa Perwakilan Penduduk), each will have 10 members, including a chairman and a secretary.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said members of the committee would be appointed by the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry.
“Those to be appointed to the committees are local leaders and we expect these to be set up by May,” he told reporters after chairing the National Council on Local Government meeting here yesterday.
Also present at the meeting were Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan and his deputy Datuk Halimah Mohamad Saddique.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had introduced the committee as a new way to improve the Government’s delivery service during the tabling of Budget 2014.
The committees would be set up in 148 local councils throughout the country except for City Hall, Putrajaya Corporation and Labuan Corporation.
Muhyiddin said this was because these three areas already had a similar set-up known as the Urban Wellbeing Representative Councils.
Each member, he added, would be appointed for a two-year term and could sit in the committee for up to two terms.
“The chairman of a committee in the city councils and municipalities will be paid a monthly allowance of RM800 while the secretary will get RM400.
“For committees in the district councils, the chairman will be paid RM500 and the secretary will get RM250,” he said, adding that RM63mil had been set aside for the initiative.
