JOHOR BARU: They were the “Bonnie and Clyde” of the Kluang district — he broke into homes while she waited for him to return with the loot and sold them.
Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were the most well-known gangster couple in history, terrorising central America during the height of the Great Depression in the 1930s. They evolved from small-time heists to robbing banks. Their exploits were documented in the 1967 Oscar-winning film Bonnie and Clyde, starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
In the local “version”, the boyfriend breaks into homes in the district and steals valuables like jewellery and mobile phones. His girlfriend then sells them to pawnshops and used mobile phone shops.
Johor police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the 19-year-old female suspect was arrested on Feb 26 at 3am in a house in Kampung Tengah, Layang-Layang, Kluang.
Her partner, 21, was detained at Jalan Layang-Layang, Bukit Batu at 3am the next day.
“We have solved 16 house break-in cases in Kluang with the arrest of the two. The male suspect had previous criminal records and tested positive for drugs,” SDCP Mohd Mokhtar said yesterday.
He added that police recovered a stolen motorcycle, parang, two iron rods, jewellery, watches, mobile phones as well as RM1,353, S$1,042 (RM2,685) and 11,000 rupiah (RM3) in cash among other items.
The case is being investigated under Section 457 of the Penal Code for burglary. If found guilty, the two can be jailed for up to 14 years and fined.
Separately, SDCP Mohd Mokhtar said a woman and five men, aged between 18 and 37, were detained in Kota Tinggi for involvement in drug distribution activities.
Police seized 102g of methamphetamine worth RM9,660 and 322g of heroin valued at RM40,800.
Initial investigations showed that four of the men tested positive for drugs. One of them had previous criminal records and was on the police’s wanted list.
