PETALING JAYA: Herman Tino’s Kajang by-election theme song, Nyamuk Nakal Lipas Liar (Naughty Mosquito, Wild Cockroach), will soon be on the Internet.
The dangdut singer said the “stinging number” would be uploaded on YouTube soon.
Identifying himself as “the naughty mosquito”, Herman stopped short of saying that the wild cockroach refers to Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is vying for the state seat – apparently as a first step to becoming Selangor Mentri Besar.
Parts of the lyrics go: “Aku nyamuk yang nakal, engkau lipas yang liar (I am a naughty mosquito, you are a wild cockroach).
“Kajang saksi engkau menggila (Kajang witnesses you going crazy).
“Engkau memang ternama, engkau gila kuasa (You are renowned, you are power crazy).”
Stressing that he was not being paid by anyone to split votes, Herman said he wanted to contest in the spirit of democracy.
“If the electorate views me as a vote spoiler and out to make money, then I will not contest,” he said.
The 60-year-old singer, who had a string of chart-toppers in the 1980s, created the #Herman4Kajang Twitter handle to gauge reaction to his intention to contest the state seat.
Herman said Selangor people generally do not want outsiders to lead the state administration.
“We want a smart leader, not a smart aleck leader,” he said.
The Kajang seat fell vacant following the resignation of PKR assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh barely eight months after the 13th general election.
It is the fourth by-election forced by PKR, following the parliamentary by-election in Permatang Pauh (2008) and the polls for the state seats of Bukit Selambau and Penanti (both in 2009).
Barisan Nasional is fielding MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun while the other independents are likely to be Datuk Zaid Ibrahim and lawyer Yuktes Vijay.
Former Anwar ally Datuk S. Nallakaruppan has decided not to contest to campaign for Barisan.
Herman said he has a high regard for Chew.
“She stood by her party at the time when the community ditched it.
“She did not join the rival party that had then gained popularity. That goes to show she is a leader with integrity. I am proud of that Chinese woman,” he said.
Herman said his wife Noraini Ibnu was adamant that he avoid the contest but his son, a businessman, and daughter, a lawyer, had given their blessings.
