"Slaughterhouse" raid nabs 16 illegals

JOHOR BARU: Immigration officers literally cut short the stay of a group of foreigners after a raid at an "abattoir."

The foreigners, believed to be illegal immigrants, were so engrossed in slaughtering chickens  that they were unaware of the officers' presence at about midnight on Friday.

The eight Indonesians and eight Pakistanis, ages between 21 and 42, were detained for abusing their social visit passes.

Johor Immigration assistant deputy director Sapian Kamaruddin said 20 officers conducted the raid at the slaughterhouse located in Jalan Cenderai 28 in Kota Putri, Masai.

"They were busy cutting the chickens and packing them for sundry shops when the officers arrived.

”At the sight of the authorities, the men threw down their cleavers and packets of chicken parts and tried to make a run for it,” he said.

Some of the foreigners even tried to hide behind chicken coops but were arrested.

They are now being detained at the Pekan Nenas immigration depot for further action.
