KUALA LUMPUR: Accounts executive Yap Mee Ling has died after a hit-and-run incident left her battling for dear life.
Mee Ling, 48, was warded at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) for a week after she was critically injured while crossing the road near Jalan Sultan Sulaiman at 6.45am Feb 14.
A car allegedly rammed into her as she was walking to her office near Wisma Tun Sambanthan from Wisma Pahlawan.
She was reportedly suffering from severe head injuries and was pronounced dead around 11.50am Saturday.
Her grieving friend Lee Chee Hoong, 57, said Mee Ling was a kind person and her absence will be felt.
“We worked together for 20 years and she was like family to me.
“Mee Ling was ever so dedicated to her job but still found time for her friends,” said the general manager.
Lee added that he would continue assisting the Yap family in the search for witnesses even if chances of finding them are thin.
“It won’t be easy but we won’t give up looking for witnesses.
“So far only one person came forward with information on the accident,” Lee told The Star.
The witness, 25-year-old Eric Chan, said he was on his way to the temple for prayers when he saw a speeding vehicle knock down Mee Ling.
“Mee Ling was crossing the road and stopped halfway when she noticed a car coming.
“She may have stopped in the middle of the road to make way for the incoming vehicle,” said Eric.
He added that the car, identified as a Proton Wira Aeroback, rammed into Mee Ling as the driver was turning a corner.
“The driver stopped for two to three seconds after the collision but did not leave the vehicle.
“I was not able to make out the car's colour and registration number in the dark,” Eric explained.
He said that many motorcyclists came to Mee Ling’s aid after seeing the accident.
“I contacted the family on Thursday after seeing posts of the accident on Facebook.
“I followed Mee Ling’s sister to the police station to have my statement recorded,” said Eric.
Mee Ling will be cremated at the Nirvana Memorial Park in Semenyih on Monday.
The family hoped that witnesses would still come forward with information on the hit-and-run accident and assist them in tracking down the driver.
