KUALA LUMPUR: The nationwide water crisis will top the list of issues to be discussed at the Cabinet meeting next week.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Cabinet would look at how best to overcome the problem and be briefed by Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry.
Najib said the current low water level did not warrant the call for a state of emergency.
“We still have some time and we are now assessing the areas where water is at a critical level,” he told reporters after chairing an Umno supreme council meeting.
The water level at several dams, including in Negri Sembilan and Selangor, is near critical and dropping fast due to the dry spell.
Najib said cloud seeding would be conducted but the exercise depended on the availability of sufficient rain clouds.
He added that mosques and surau nationwide had also been asked to carry out sembahyang hajat (special prayers) to pray for rain.
On a separate matter, Najib, who is also Umno president, said five party members were sacked for sabotaging the party during the general election last year.
They are Baharim Abdullah from Kuala Pilah division; Abdul Mohsin Sharif and Mohd Amri Che Ad (Tasik Gelugor); Hassan Bahri Mat Isa (Jempol); and Mohd Zulkifli Zakaria (Bachok).
He said the party’s 20,000-odd branches would hold their annual meetings between April 1 and May 15.
