Chew likely to be named Barisan's candidate

PETALING JAYA: MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun is expected to be named the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Kajang state by-election.

MCA sources said Chew’s candidacy is expected to be announced before end of the week, barring any last minute changes.

After a three-year hiatus, Chew made a comeback when she won one of the four VP slots at the party’s Dec 21 polls last year.

Chew, 50, resigned as Wanita MCA chief on April 8, 2010.

Later, in the same month, she resigned as senator and Deputy Women, Family and Community Development minister. Chew was also former Member of Parliament of Petaling Jaya Utara.

The Kajang state seat fell vacant after incumbent Lee Chin Cheh of the PKR abruptly stepped down to give way to Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, leading to speculation that he was paving the way to take over as Selangor Mentri Besar from Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.
