STING arrests four and seizes over 80kg of heroin

GEORGE TOWN: Bukit Aman’s Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) scored another major success when it busted a heroin processing laboratory at a condominium unit in Solok Gangsa here and seized more than 80kg of heroin worth over RM3.2mil.

The team detained two men, aged 42 and 53, and two women, including a Chinese national said to be the wife of the older suspect, who is also believed to be the mastermind.

Sources said the four were picked at three separate places on Sunday before the mastermind led the team to the condominium unit-cum-drug laboratory on Monday.

Police seized 73.6kg of heroin and 9kg of heroin base (often found in Europe — when prepared for injection, it will only dissolve in water when mixed with an acid and heated) as well as various types of chemicals and drug processing equipment.

The team received their first break with the arrest of the 42-year-old unemployed man and a 41-year-old businesswoman at a cafe in Tanjung Tokong on Sunday.

An assortment of drugs comprising methamphetamine (18gm), heroin (142gm) and 69 Erimin 5 pills were seized with their arrest.

Half an hour later, the mastermind was picked up at another condominium unit in Solok Gangsa.

They were then brought to a foot reflexology centre in Burma Road, where the woman from China was nabbed. The premises was searched and 32gm of heroin was found.

The drug bust was STING’s latest success since it was launched on Jan 30 to nab drug kingpins, stop drug shipments through all entry and exit points and seize precursor substances (ingredients used for manufacturing illicit drugs).

In a tweet, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar commended STING for its success.

He tweeted: “Syabas STING @PDRMsia berjaya lagi tumpaskan Makmal proses heroin di Penang tadi. Tangkap 4 org, rampas lebih 80kg heroin (Congratulations to STING for crippling another drug laboratory in Penang).”
