KUALA LUMPUR: The three gold bars that were found in the toilet of an Indian budget airliner have been moved to Bank Negara for safe keeping while the authorities work on finding its owner.
Sepang acting OCPD Deputy Supt Zaldino Zaludin said the authorities have yet to determine if the bars were genuine and whether there was any need to pursue a case on the matter since the flight originated from Singapore and was bound for Chennai.
“We haven’t received much communication from the Singaporean authorities, which could be a problem since we don’t know if this case is to be pursued here or there.
“For now we’ll just keep the bars under lock and key. The owner or anyone with information on the gold can come to the Serdang police headquarters.
“But mind you, we will grill whoever comes forward on how the bars ended up in the toilet. And they must provide conclusive proof the bars are theirs!” DSP Zaldino said.
On Thursday, IndiGo flight 6EO54 made an emergency landing at KL International Airport at 7.30am after a crew member spotted a mysterious package in one of the toilets.
Fire and Rescue Department officials, who believed it could be a bomb or chemicals, were surprised to find three gold bars weighing less than 1kg in the package.
Meanwhile, a Changi Airport spokesman said there was no restriction on the carriage of gold onto flights – subject to passengers keeping to their hand carry allowances.
IndiGo told The Wall Street Journal yesterday that the airline and local Indian authorities were investigating the incident.
