BENTONG: The MCA is preparing its list of candidates for the Kajang by-election, party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

“The (Kajang) division has submitted three names and we are also looking at other potential candidates,” he said.

He added that the party would seek feedback from voters in finding a suitable candidate.

“It is an important by-election and we are preparing to get the people’s views,” he said after attending a Chinese New Year open house in Kampung Manchis, here, yesterday.

Besides having public support, Liow said the candidate must be committed to serve and protect the interests of the constituents.

The gender and age of the candidate would not be the focus, he explained.

The March 23 by-election has been called following the resignation of PKR assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh.

It has been said that Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would be the PKR candidate amidst talk that he would take over the Selangor Mentri Besar’s job.

Liow hit out at Anwar for “causing” the by-election that would be a burden to the people.

“We want to explain to the people that this election was created by the Opposition,” he said.

In Kuala Lumpur, MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong also stressed that the party leadership was considering comments and feedback from the public on the choice of candidate.

“We have to carry out an in-depth analysis on the winnability of every (potential) candidate,” he said after attending Magnum Care’s Chinese New Year ang pow contributions to charitable homes.

Also present at the event was MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon, whose name is among those raised in the press as a potential candidate.

However, Dr Wee refused to confirm whether Chong was among those shortlisted.

“I do not want to go into details,” he said.

Besides Chong, former Wanita MCA chief Datuk Paduka Chew Mei Fun and national organising secretary Datuk Yoo Wei How’s names have also been bandied about.

Dr Wee said the name of the candidate would be announced by Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
