LOAN sharks find the Malays easiest to bully, reported Utusan Malaysia.
Quoting MCA Public Services and Complaints Department chief Datuk Seri Michael Chong in a special report on illegal moneylending, the daily said borrowers were often cruelly and mercilessly treated by the ah long.
He said the loan sharks found it easier to dupe the Malays into borrowing RM1,000 for a repayment of RM10,000 as the interests on instalments were hefty.
Furthermore, the Malays are easily humiliated and frightened, encouraging the ah long to brazenly put up posters of the borrowers’ faces in public places to coax them into paying up faster.
Chong said there was an increasing number of Malay women taking out loans, adding that most Malay borrowers were desperate due to failed business ventures and get-rich-quick schemes.
He said the Chinese mostly borrowed from loan sharks to support their gambling habits.
> A 68-year-old woman was bludgeoned to death by her grandson, who was said to be drunk, at their village in Tamparuli, Sabah.
Saturday’s 2.30pm incident occurred after the woman and the young man met along a road that led to the home of her daughter-in-law at Kampung Bundu Gulu Tungus.
The daughter-in-law is the man’s mother.
Realising that he had hit Lotia Monginas, the suspect broke down and cried before calling for his mother, Harian Metro reported.
Lotias was rushed to the Tuaran Hospital where she died at around 6.30pm due to severe injuries caused by heavy clubbing.
Tuaran district police chief Abdul Fuad Abdul Malik said the suspect had been held under Section 302 of the Penal Code for the murder.
