KOTA TINGGI: A camping trip ended in tragedy for a family when two cousins drowned at the Tanjung Balau beach here.
Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Rahmat Othman said 12 members of a family, all from Johor Baru, were on holiday here since Friday.
He said tragedy struck after 6pm, when several of them decided to take a swim in the choppy sea.
“A strong wave pulled two of the cousins deeper into the sea where they got into difficulties and drowned,” he said, adding that the two have been identified as J. Krisna Kumar and R. Ghanapathy, both aged 31.
Supt Rahmat said police received a distress call from one of their relatives at around 6.25pm on Jan 31, about the incident.
He said a search and rescue mission was immediately set up to find the two victims.
Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department and the Civil Defence Department found the two bodies not far from where they were last seen.
He also said the bodies have been sent to the Kota Tinggi Hospital for a post-mortem and the case has been classified as sudden death.
