Source of the problem: One the quarries which is causing the pollution in Air Bemban in Kulaijaya.
KULAIJAYA: Folks in Air Bemban here are up in arms over worsening air pollution caused by four quarries in the area.
The small town has a population of over 3,000, mostly old folks, and many feel that the their health and that of their children has deteriorated.
Retiree Sim Ching, 66, who resides in Jalan Air Bemban 5, some 500m from one of the quarries, expressed his anger over the issue, which has been going on for over 10 years.
“It’s getting worse. Sometimes the dust particles are visible. My three-year-old grandson is now suffering from severe rashes all over his body due to the dirty air,” he said at a press conference here on Tuesday.
Another grandparent, Chai Kim Fah, 58, said she had taken her three grandchildren to the hospital eight times in a month.
“They were falling ill so often that medical expenses came up to some RM1,000.
“The doctor suspected that the air pollutants were the reason for the constant cough, fever, flu and breathing problems,” she added.
Chai also said she constantly fell ill.
Other residents complained that they had to sweep and clean their homes at least four times a day as the dirt from the quarries constantly flew into their homes.
Bukit Batu assemblyman Jimmy Puah Wee Tse, who organised the conference, said he would get in touch with the managements of the quarries to seek a long-term solution and also contact the state Environment Department.
State executive councillor for health and environment Ayub Rahmat said he and department officers would conduct on-site checks to investigate the situation.
“We will go there and help the residents,” he added.
