Selangor will not interfere in Jais probe, says Khalid

PETALING JAYA: Selangor will not interfere with the religious authorities' investigation into the use of the word Allah in bibles, said Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

“With regards to the kalimah Allah issue, the Selangor Islamic Affairs Council (Mais) and the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) are conducting investigations. The state government will not interfere, to avoid disturbing investigations,” he said in a tweet from his @Khalid_Ibrahim account on Saturday morning.

The probe by Mais and Jais is ongoing, after the latter seized more than 300 Malay and Iban-language bibles from the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) premises on Jan 2.

The seizure was conducted under the purview of a state law that prohibits the use of 25 Arabic words and phrases by non-Muslims in the practice of their faiths.

On Friday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the 10-point resolution on the Allah issue - which among others, allows the Christian community in Sabah and Sarawak to continue using the word Allah in the Malay version of the Bible - is subject to Federal and state laws, as expressly stated by the ninth item in the resolution.

"This means that if the state has an enactment (on use of the word Allah), it is subject to this. If the state does not have such an enactment, like Sabah and Sarawak, so the usual practice will be continued and no party should scare others," he told reporters after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting at Menara Dato Onn.
