PETALING JAYA: After years of trying and waiting to have a child, Fino and Shima (not their real names), were finally blessed with one lovely baby girl through OrphanCARE.
Fino said they got married in 1993 but during their first 10 years, they choose not to have children to enjoy being together.
“But when we decided to have children we found out that we could not,” he said.
“We approached the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) for help and even tried out traditional medicine but nothing worked,” he told The Star.
Fino, 44, a freelance language lecturer, said he and his wife got to know about OrphanCARE Foundation two years ago and went for a screening interview.
A few months later they received a call from OrphanCARE informing them that a two-week old baby girl was available for adoption.
“We felt so excited and blessed. We fell in love with the baby and named her Sorfina,” said Shima, 44.
She said one of the most precious moments was when Sorfina uttered the words “mama” and “pa” for the first time recently.
Shima said being parents was challenging but wonderful and “Sorfina has brought so much happiness to us since she came into our life. It’s like she chose us.”
“We also lost weight taking care of her, which is a blessing in disguise.
“She is a very curious and active girl,” she added.
Fino said he and his wife were very grateful to OrphanCARE for answering their prayers and hoped that unwed and troubled mothers would use baby hatches instead of dumping or aborting their babies.
“There’s nothing to be shy or scared about.
“Babies are not to be blamed and they have the right to live. There are many happy couples that want to have them,” he said.
Fino and Shima are one of the 90 couples, who had adopted abandoned babies through OrphanCARE’s Baby Hatch project set up in 2010.
The non-governmental organisation set up three baby hatches in 2010 to discourage the dumping of babies by desperate unwed mothers and provide a safe avenue and assurance of confidentiality.
OrphanCARE chairman Tan Sri Faisah Mohd Tahir said the fourth baby hatch would be opened in the northern region next year.
