Sabah government wants reasons for state-wide blackout explained

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government does not want a repeat of the state-wide power outage, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said.

He said officials of utility firm Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd should brief the state Cabinet about the cause of the massive 12-hour outage that hit some 500,000 consumers in the state and Labuan on Friday.

“We also want them to tell us what measures they are taking to ensure this incident does not recur in the future,” he said, after a Maulidur Rasul gathering in the Sandakan district Sunday.

Musa said people should stop speculating on the causes of the blackout that occurred at about 11.05am on Friday and was fully restored by about 10pm on the same day.

SESB officials have said the power supply disruption occurred after simultaneous tripping along its east-west transmission grid.

Company managing director Abdul Razak Salim described the massive power supply failure as “unexpected” as its state-wide power grid was designed to protect against simultaneous tripping.

SESB senior general manager (asset management) Muhamad Nazri Pazil said a special investigating team made up of top company engineers and their Energy Commission counterparts would be investigating the causes behind the blackout.

He said the full report of the investigation would be handed over to the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry, the Sabah Cabinet, Tenaga Nasional and the commission.
