KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and South Korea are interested in discussing forestry issues between the two countries, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel (pic) said here.
He said both parties were particularly interested in forestry as 70% of South Korea was still covered by forest as compared with Malaysia’s 60%.
“I also invited South Korea to get involved in reforestation activities in Malaysia, especially in Cameron Highlands, where rampant illegal clearing of land had taken place over the years,” he said in a statement here yesterday.
The discussion between Palanivel and South Korea’s environment ministry officials lasted more than an hour in his ministry last week.
The officials were elected members of the Environment and Labour Committee of National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, namely Joo Young-soon, Yi Wan-young, Rhee Chong Hoon and Kim Kyung-hyup; Environment Industry Division of the Environment Ministry, Park Yong Kyu.
Palanivel said South Korea would conduct several more visits before deciding which area they would get involved in.
He said the officials also pointed out that several of the republic’s big corporations, namely Samsung, Daewoo and Hyundai were involved in a variety of projects in Malaysia and it would not be an issue for them to get involved in reforestation programmes here.
However, he said they were particularly interested in setting up nuclear power plants in Malaysia, adding that he explained that Malaysia was still not ready for a nuclear power plant from South Korea, as it was still a sensitive issue among Malaysians.
Describing the discussion as fruitful, Palanivel said South Korea had also shown interest in participating in many other areas, including recycling of waste water and literation of waste water from industries before being discharged into rivers. — Bernama
