PETALING JAYA: Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim will not go for the No. 2 post in PKR.
Sources close to Khalid said he has no intention of going head-on with incumbent party deputy president Azmin Ali, as he did not want to waste time on political mud-slinging.
Khalid’s decision not to contest for the post should put an end to the attacks against him in the run up to the party elections in April.
“Khalid is not after Azmin’s post. Azmin can stay calm,” said the source.
Khalid’s decision came a day after he had a chat with PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on a host of issues concerning the state.
It is learnt that among the topics discussed were Selangor’s water deal with the Federal Government, the ouster of Azmin from the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) board and a proposal to kick Khalid out of the MB’s office, which was rejected by Anwar during a recent PKR political bureau meeting.
Khalid was said to be in an upbeat mood after meeting Anwar.
“The Mentri Besar wants to focus on matters that are of importance to the people of Selangor,” said the source.
People in Khalid’s circle said they have seen how nasty the competition was when Azmin and Datuk Zaid Ibrahim slugged it out in the 2010 party election.
Zaid eventually quit the race and later the party after complaining of electoral fraud.
“We do not want a repeat of such a mess,” said a party insider.
