Riza to produce Dumb And Dumber

PETALING JAYA: Hollywood-based Malaysian producer Riza Aziz, who is riding high in Tinseltown at the moment with the success of The Wolf Of Wall Street, looks set for another box-office hit on Nov 14.

Twenty years after the release of Dumb And Dumber, fans will be able to watch the reunion of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in the sequel called Dumb And Dumber To – thanks to Riza.

Riza’s production company, Red Granite Pictures, is signed on to finance the movie which reportedly costs US$35mil (RM115mil).

The sequel will be directed by the Farrelly brothers, Bobby and Peter – both of whom also directed the first movie.

Production for Dumb And Dumber To started last September with location shoots in Atlanta, the United States.

Released in 1994, Dumb and Dumber cost US$16mil (RM53mil) and earned almost US$250mil (RM824mil) worldwide.

A prequel, Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, which featured different cast and film makers, was released in 2003, though the effort was generally panned by critics.

Red Granite is a finance and distribution company that Riza and his partner Joey McFarland started in 2009.

Apparently, it thrives on picking up movie proposals that for various reasons are left on the backburner, and funds them with money raised from investors in the Middle East and Asia, with such proposals including A Wolf On Wall Street as well as Dumb And Dumber To.

Red Granite picked up the latter after the original studio decided to drop the project after several false starts.

The company then applied to the court to exclude Brad Krevoy and Steve Stabler, the producers of the first movie, from any involvement in the sequel.

In a counter suit, Krevoy and Stabler accused Riza and McFarland of “unlawful and unethical conduct”.

The counter suit also claimed Riza and McFarland lacked the experience necessary to successfully produce motion pictures, which may not hold water in court following their success with The Wolf Of Wall Street, directed by Martin Scorsese.

Riza, 37, is making waves on the Hollywood award season with the movie that garnered five Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, though it was Leonardo DiCaprio who won for Best Actor for Musical or Comedy at the recent Golden Globes.

Riza is clearly driven, and made no secret of his aim to produce several films a year.

“We’d like to make three to five films a year, with one tentpole and two or three films with more modest budgets in the US$20mil (RM65mil) to US$40mil (RM131mil) range,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.

A tentpole is a big-budget blockbuster movie whose profits will be used to subsidise smaller movies made by a studio.

Apart from Dumb And Dumber To, Red Granite Pictures will also release Horns, a fantasy thriller featuring Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, this year.
