PUTRAJAYA: MCA has lashed back at DAP over a raid on the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM), saying that DAP was not fit to criticise the party over the incident.
Instead, MCA publicity bureau chairman Datuk Chai Kim Sen said the matter came under the jurisdiction of the Pakatan-led Selangor state government, and slammed DAP for diverting blame to others.
“Now that PKR ketua umum (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) has called on the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to give back the seized Malay and Iban language Bibles to BSM, this indicates that the root of the problem stems from Jais themselves.
“Hence, DAP has just slapped itself on the cheek,” Chai said in a statement yesterday.
On Jan 12, DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua accused MCA of having “no moral standing” to criticise the Selangor government over measures being taken to return the seized Bibles.
Pua said the problem first arose because MCA had passed a religious enactment with Umno in 1988.
Chai said in his statement that since the Jan 2 raid, DAP had not been able to compel the Pakatan-led state government to take action against the enforcement officers involved in the raid.
“There has been scant outcry from DAP elected representatives, which highlights that DAP is not owning up to their responsibility and holds no power at all among their allies,” Chai said.
He said DAP’s response to the incident showed that its claims that all three parties within Pakatan share equal footing was a “facade”.
He accused DAP of not being able to halt such raids by religious authorities on the premises of non-Muslims despite being a member of the Pakatan state administration.
