KUALA LUMPUR: History was created in the police force when a woman was appointed as the commandant of the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here.
Senior Asst Comm Nahariah Hussien, who has been with the force for 38 years, was previously Bukit Aman D1 principal assistant director before she was made Pulapol’s 42nd commandant.
“I am grateful to be appointed as the first woman commandant, and I would like to thank the PDRM leadership for their trust in me. It is truly a great honour,” she said after attending the handing-over of official duties yesterday. It was witnessed by Federal Logistics Department deputy director Deputy Comm Datuk Zubaidah Md Ismail.
SAC Nahariah, 57, replaces SAC Zulkifli Mohamad, who is now deputy director of Bukit Aman Management Department.
SAC Nahariah said her appointment was the highest recognition given to a woman police officer since Pulapol was established in 1904.
Born in Muar, she joined the police force in 1976 as cadet inspector at Pulapol. She has served in various posts at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent and Bukit Aman throughout her career.
Asked what she would bring to Pulapol now that she’s its head, SAC Nahariah said she would ensure that its members were honest and sincere in carrying out their duties.
“This centre is the cradle of the police force,” she pointed out.
“Pulapol is the place where civilians are moulded to become police officers. They are tasked with protecting the people,” she added.
SAC Nahariah’s replacement in Bukit Aman is SAC Datuk Mohd Nizar Ali. He was previously deputy director of Bukit Aman’s management department.
