PETALING JAYA: A teacher, said to be upset that his request for his wife’s transfer to Selangor from Johor was ignored, allegedly threw a punch at Deputy Education Minister II P. Kamalanathan.
Police sources said prior to the 3pm incident on Sunday, the teacher’s father had met Kamalanathan to seek his assistance in the transfer matter.
He was allegedly told it would be difficult and he returned home to inform his son, a Kuala Selangor Umno Youth official, about it.
The teacher returned to Kamalanathan’s service centre in Bukit Beruntung and kicked up a fuss.
The 31-year-old man, whose newly-wed wife is also a teacher, had wanted her to be transferred to Hulu Selangor as he did not want to be separated from her.
Kamalanathan was allegedly hit on the neck in the incident that followed.
Kuala Kubu Baru OCPD Supt Syukri Yaacob said they had recorded a statement from the suspect, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.
“The investigation papers will be forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action,” he said.
The suspect is liable to a fine of not more than RM2,000, or a jail term of not more than a year, or both, if convicted.
Police sources said the suspect did not have a history of violence.
Meanwhile, Kamalanathan is still reeling in shock over the unexpected incident.
“This is part of the employment hazard,” he said.
Selangor MIC Youth chief A. Shanker Raj criticised the Umno Youth official for allegedly behaving in such an unruly manner.
He said the incident had caused an embarrassment to the Barisan Nasional Youth movement.
“The Barisan Youth leadership must take action against the emotionally-driven individual who went overboard,” he said.
MIC Youth also called on the teacher to publicly apologise to Kamalanathan for acting in a wild and improper manner.
