KUALA LUMPUR: Trudging through the darkness of a thick jungle for almost an hour, the rescue team searching for survivors of the Cessna 172 plane crash was relieved to hear the cry for help of one of the victims.
It was a moment of triumph for firefighter Nur Azilee Kadir, 31, when he managed to locate the victims some 100m away from the wreckage at about 3.45am on Saturday.
“We had hiked up for 45mins before reaching the last known location of the plane.
“We had been trekking through the dense jungle and calling out for the victims for almost an hour before hearing a reply,” he said.
Nur Azilee was part of the first responder team to reach the survivors who had been braving the elements since their plane crashed at 5.30pm Friday.
Rodzlan Othman, 45, who was also part of the team, said that the survivors were in shock and suffering from trauma when they were found.
“Two of them were lying down while the other was sitting up.
“They were cold, hungry and we tried to calm them down before evacuating them,” said Rodzlan.
As two of the victims were unable to walk, rescuers had to transport them into a boat before getting them into an ambulance.
33-year-old farmer Darmawan Kamarulzaman, from Kampung Sungai Tua Baru, who led the rescuers to the crash site, was the first to hear an explosion some 2km away from his farm.
“I called up my friend who notified the authorities after hearing the crash around 5pm.
“The rescue team contacted me at 12am to assist them in locating the victims,” said Darmawan.
