Carpet seller drowns while riding bike on flooded bridge

KOTA BARU: A Pakistani national paid with his life when he tried to ride a motorcycle across a bridge submerged in a river in Jeli following heavy rain.

Muktaj Gull, 38, drowned after the machine slid into the five-metre deep Sungai Ketil in Ladang Kuala Balah at 12.30 pm, as he was attempting to get across to the other side of the river, said Jeli Fire and Rescue station chief Assistant Superintendent Soleh Nasir.

He said two of Muktaj's friends, who were on two other motorcycles, tried in vain to help him out of the water.

"It is understood that the three Pakistanis were on their way to Ladang Kuala Balah to sell carpets to the villagers there," he said.

He said Muktaj's body was recovered 10m from the spot where he had fallen into the river by a team comprising 17 personnel from the Jeli Fire and Rescue station and voluntary firemen at about 3pm.

The body was sent to the Jeli Hospital. - Bernama
