MARAN: Pahang police have broken a ring of car and motorcycle thieves and arrested 11 young people. All were found to have been on drugs.
Pahang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Zakaria Ahmad said the 11 men and a woman, aged between 18 to 21-years-old, had been arrested in Bera, Maran and Jerantut in an operation on Dec 28 last year.
The ring had been active since mid-2013.
"Up to 10 stolen motorcycles, five cars, two units of motorcycle chassis and another two units of motorcycle engine chassis have been recovered from this group, which we call the 'Mat Obert' gang.
"They were also involved in other criminal activities such as burglaries and snatch thefts using the stolen motorcycles," said SAC Mohd Zakaria in a press conference here on Friday.
He said at least 18 vehicle thefts and eight burglary cases in Bera, Temerloh, Maran and Kuantan had been solved with the arrest of the suspects.
SAC Mohd Zakaria added that all 12 suspects also tested positive for drug use.
"They are now under remand in Maran and will be charged soon. If found guilty, they can be jailed not less than a year and not more than seven years," he said.
On the shooting incident of policeman Kpl Abdul Halim Md Ali, SAC Mohd Zakaria said police are actively tracking down the suspects and investigations were still ongoing.
On Monday, Kpl Abdul Halim was found dead with shotgun wounds in the face and chest after he went missing while pursuing two supposedly armed suspects.
Asked on the status of investigation into the death of a three-year-old toddler who was left in a car by his father last Friday, SAC Mohd Zakaria said police had interviewed all witnesses including the parents and the investigation papers would been sent to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
