KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP chairman Jimmy Wong dismissed talk that the resignations of two top party leaders was because of his leadership.
The outspoken Kota Kinabalu MP said this when contacted over the resignations of Sabah DAP deputy chief Fred Fung and vice-chief Peter Liew Fui Ken.
“I don’t think it is about me. It is just an excuse. We believe our enemies are working hard to undermine public confidence in the party, which has done very well in the last general election,” Wong said.
He said it was Fung who invited him to contest for the Kota Kinabalu parliament seat instead of defending his Sri Tanjung state seat in Tawau.
"I don’t think there is any truth that KK members were unhappy about my presence in Kota Kinabalu,’’ he said when dismissing claims that certain Kota Kinabalu-based members were against Wong who hails from Tawau.
Wong said both Liew and Fung wanted to be candidates in the last elections but they could not be included as Sabah DAP had shared seats with other Pakatan Rakyat parties.
Both men, he noted, might be still having links with former Sabah DAP adviser and Luyang assemblyman, Hiew King Cheu, who became a Barisan-friendly independent representative after he quit the party late last year.
"Whatever they have decided, we wish them their best,’’ he said, adding that it was normal in politics for people to join and leave parties. Sabah DAP, he said, was still strong and will continue to serve the people.
Liew, who resigned on Wednesday, had said that he was fed up with the leadership style of Sabah DAP and had accused them of holding secret meetings without consulting him.
He quit from all his party posts in the state committee as well as a life member of the party.
His resignation comes just a week after Sabah DAP deputy chairman Fred Fung resigned.
"I have lost faith and trust over the leadership of DAP and feel very disheartened over the treatment I received from people, who are in control of the state committee,'' Liew said.
He said there was something seriously wrong with Sabah DAP, where senior party members and loyalists have been resigning, despite the party's best showing in the May 2013 general election.
Sabah DAP won three state seats and one parliament seat.
The cracks began to appear when Api Api assemblyman Hiew King Cheu quit the party the party in December last year to become a Barisan-friendly independent.
DAP and its Pakatan Rakyat partner, Sabah PKR, has been reeling in a series of defections despite the Opposition's best electoral showing in over a decade where it won 12 of the 60 state seats and three of the 25 parliament seats in the state.
Sabah PKR lost two elected assemblyman - Jelani Hamdan (Matunggong) and Jeremy Majalad (Kadamaian) - who became Barisan-friendly independents while at least nine PKR division heads also quit the party.
