PORT KLANG: It will be 665 boxes of fireworks less for the Chinese New Year, with the Selangor Customs making its first seizure of smuggled goods in the new year.

State Customs director Badaruddin Mohamed Rafik said the boxes of fireworks, with a street value of more than RM750,000, were believed to be from China and were found in the living room of a shophouse in Jalan Kebun, on Jan 3.

“We believe the shophouse was used to store the fireworks for the upcoming Chinese New Year festival,” he told reporters here yesterday.

There were no arrests yet, but Badaruddin said they were in the midst of identifying the tenant and the landlord of the shophouse.

“When the team raided the premises, there was nobody manning the place. There were only boxes containing the illegal items,” he said, adding the department acted on a tip-off.

Badaruddin said it was becoming increasingly difficult to nab those smuggling fireworks into the country, adding that this was because the culprits change locations frequently.

“Smugglers change their modus operandi every now and then to dodge the authorities and our work would be more difficult if the public did not help us,” he said, adding that the case was being investigated under the Customs Act 1967 for possessing and storing unlicensed goods.

In another case, Customs enforcement officers raided a two-storey shoplot that was found illegally manufacturing, storing and distributing what was believed to be imitation liquor. Three foreigners were arrested in the Jan 2 raid.

Badaruddin said the seized goods had a market value worth more than RM73,700 with unpaid duty of more than RM214,700.
