KUALA LUMPUR: Fomca has advised consumers to be wary of advertisements offering free beautification treatment as it may turn out to be a trap for quick gain.

Its deputy president Muhammad Sha'ani Abdullah said it received 2,470 complaints on beauty and slimming treatment involving claims amounting to RM1.7mil in 2011.

"The figure is an increase of 44.7 per cent compared to 1,706 complaints reported in 2010.

"Consumers should not believe the free treatment as it may be a lie. Logically, no company want to incur losses," he told Bernama here.

Of 2,470 complaints received in 2011, 52.7 percent involved unethical trade procedures, 39.9 percent quality of services while 8 per cent were related to safety issues.

Consumers should not compromise on safety or be fooled by claims of product efficacy within a short time for fear they contain materials that pose risk to health.

Muhammad Sha'ani urged the Malaysian Competition Commission (MyCC) to be more systematic and thorough in monitoring the price of goods and services in the country.

"The move to extend the jurisdiction to review and monitor prices will facilitate MyCC in giving guidance, directive or principle in determining the price to traders," he added.

MyCC is an independent body entrusted with enforcing the Competition Act 2010 to protect the process of competition in the interest of traders, consumers and the economy. - Bernama
