Stalls along Jalan Pengkai, the famous food street in town, destroyed in the early morning fire.
BATU PAHAT: Four stalls in Jalan Pengkai, the famous food street in town, were destroyed in a fire early Saturday morning.
Residents living nearby were woken up by a loud explosion although no one was injured in the incident that occurred about 1am.
The stalls that were destroyed were selling yao char kuai (deep-fried dough sticks), mussels fried noodles, fried nian gao (Chinese sticky rice cake) and mee hoon kueh (hand-torn noodles).
A stall operator, who did not want to be named, said all the stalls closed around midnight.
“We believe the fire started from a stall at the corner. It spread very fast and destroyed the whole row of stalls because of strong wind.
“Luckily it was a small explosion and no one was injured. The quick actions of the firefighters also helped,” he said when met at the scene.
The Fire and Rescue Department is investigating the cause of the fire.
