Nazri: Everyone has a role to play in VMY 2014 campaign

PUTRAJAYA: Visit Malaysia Year 2014 (VMY 2014) kicks off today in the form of a campaign to woo 28 million visitors to the country this year.

After months of preparation, especially at 37 entry points to the country, it is now left to every Malaysian to play their role in making the campaign a success.

Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said VMY 2014 everyone had a role to play in this national mission.

“Let’s make it a success because if it succeeds, it is our success,” he said after launching the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents’ (MATTA) dedicated website for VMY 2014 at the KL International Airport yesterday.

Nazri expressed his confidence that VMY 2014 would be a success despite the threat of a street protest in the federal capital on New Year’s Eve.

He said the protest could have just been organised on some other days, and he would gladly turn it into a tourism product.

“I am the Tourism Minister and I have to exploit every situation. If they had organised it on other days, I could bring in tourists.

“I can show to the world how democracy is very healthy in Malaysia, where all these monkeys are protesting and we don’t arrest them,” he quipped.

Meanwhile, on his Facebook page, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak called on all Malaysians to join hands in making VMY 2014 a success.

“Together, let us open our doors and welcome tourists with a smile and selamat datang,” wrote Najib, who also shared several pictures of promotional activities by Tourism Malaysia for VMY 2014.

Najib will launch VMY 2014 on Saturday.

Nazri will give a grand Selamat Datang reception for tourists arriving from Shanghai and Beijing at the KL International Airport (KLIA) today.

Nearby, at the KLIA Low-Cost Carrier Terminal, Tourism Malaysia chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen will receive another tourist group from Osaka, Japan.
