KUALA LUMPUR: Government’s Ministers can do more than take a cut in entertainment allowance as part of Putrajaya’s cost-cutting measures, said Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.
The social activist said the ministers should, in fact, take a pay cut.
“Good intent alone is not sufficient if it is not matched by sincerity. The people are suffering from price hikes and others. As a sign of solidarity with the rakyat, our leaders should suffer a little too,” added Marina, who proposed a pay cut not just for ministers but also deputy ministers and civil servants at the Jusa C grade.
“Why just cut entertainment allowances? It is more economical to reduce their salary, even by just 5%,” she said on the government’s 11 measures to reduce spending.
Marina said civil servants on Jusa C, although flying on economy class, bought full fare tickets that enabled them to be upgraded to business class or first class, unlike the public who would only go for the cheapest fare.
“We wish to see the ministers sitting at the back, in the economy class with the people,” she said.
Marina welcomed the move to reduce the appointment of consultants and event management companies, and suggested that the government demand for refunds from companies that came up with useless recommendations.
“I’m sure the people appreciate the Government’s move in cutting cost. In fact, this should have been done during the economic crisis a few years ago.
