Barefoot walk comes to a halt

GEORGE TOWN: There was no New Year’s eve celebration for nasi lemak seller Nasri Yahya (pic). He had to abort his mission to walk barefoot from Penang to Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur.

The 34-year-old called off his planned feat at about 5am yesterday near Ijok, Selangor, after both his soles started bleeding profusely.

Nasri had planned to walk 387km and arrive at Dataran Merdeka latest by 11pm yesterday.

He had started his walk at 11am on Saturday from the Esplanade here.

“My mind was willing but my feet let me down. I wanted to achieve the feat so much. It really hurts having to give up like this,” he said.

Nasri, who has done four long-distance walks since 2009, is now recuperating at a friend’s place at Ijok.

His previous feats — all of which were done with shoes — include a 335km walk from Penang to Langkawi in 2009, a 600km walk from Penang to Malacca in 2010, a 125km walk from Central Market, Kuala Lumpur to Genting Highlands, Pahang in 2011 and a 828.7km walk from Penang to Johor Baru this year.

With blood oozing from his bandaged soles in Kuala Selangor, Nasri tried to continue for another 25km before the injury became unbearable.

Nasri blamed the hot weather and several newly tarred roads in Kampar and Teluk Intan for his injury.

“The heat from the tarred roads and the humid weather were a fresh challenge as this was the first time I have walked barefooted,” said Nasri, who will try to complete his walk after resting.

“I will continue, most probably on Thursday or Friday. But a lot will depend on my wounds,” he said.
