Hi-tech crime: ACP Izany showing the skimming device used to scan ATM cards. -Bernama
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested a Polish man for installing “skimming devices” on automated teller machines (ATM) at shopping malls here.
The device is used to scan an ATM card as it is being inserted and then capture the
PIN numbers pressed by an unsuspecting victim.
It was first discovered by mall security personnel at about 2.30pm on Nov 25.
A police report was lodged but no arrests were made at the time.
However, police got a break when a second device was discovered at another mall on Dec 18.
City Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Izany Abdul Ghany said they set up an ambush and waited for someone to retrieve the device.
“We apprehended the man when he tried to take the device,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
He said CCTV recordings showed that the man had installed the device earlier that day with the help of two other men.
“Once they have the information gathered from an ATM card, they would clone the ATM cards and withdraw the cash overseas,” he said.
He said initial investigations showed that the man had been entering and leaving the country since early this year, and had been active mainly in Kuala Lumpur.
The man is on remand until Jan 6.
Police are looking for his two accomplices and assessing how much was stolen by the man’s syndicate.
On another matter, city police, with the help of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), removed 1,020 posters of unlicensed money lenders in the city streets yesterday.
ACP Izany said they had sent 231 phone numbers that were listed on the posters to the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission for further action.
“From January to November, we have arrested 45 people for posting these posters and
torn down 16,353 posters in the city,” he
