Mama: We will believe it when we see it

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Maid Employers Association (Mama) regards the undertaking by Asosiasi Perusahaan Jasa Tenaga Kerja Indonesia (Apjati) to provide a steady supply of Indonesian maids to Malaysia at a fee of RM7,800 as good news, but said it was too early to rejoice.

Association president Engku Ahmad Fauzi Engku Muhsein said it would wait and see whether the promise would be kept as there had been numerous previous disagreements over issues such as the cost structure for recruiting an Indonesian maid.

“We need to wait and see further developments on the memorandum of understanding that is being negotiated between Apjati and Papa (Malaysian Association of Foreign Maid Agencies) before we can get a more accurate indication of whether it will work.

“Any understanding between the associations can only succeed if all the parties agree on all terms, including the RM7,800 agency fee,” he said.

Engku Ahmad Fauzi, however, said that despite previous hiccups, Mama regarded the requirement by the Human Resources Ministry that Apjati and Papa adhered to the terms of the 2011 memorandum of understanding (between the Indonesian and Malaysian governments) in their negotiations as a positive step.

“It is a step in the right direction in ensuring we get an adequate supply of maids. We also hope there will be no new extra burden imposed on employers,” he said.
