Najib: Have a merry and meaningful Christmas

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak wished all Malaysian Christians a heartfelt “Merry and meaningful Christmas”, saying Dec 25th was to be celebrated as a day of “peace, joy and delight”.

In a posting on his blog 1malaysia.com.my, the Prime Minister praised Malaysia’s unity and diversity.

“I am grateful that we are able to celebrate every religious festival in harmony. Indeed, this is only possible because our true strength lies in our acceptance of each other’s differences. We are at our strongest and most majestic when we are united as one,” he wrote.

Najib said that disharmony and discord in other nations was caused simply because people of different faiths and beliefs refused to accept differences.

He said Malaysia had always battled discord and attempts to cause dissent, and had managed to successfully overcome these hurdles.

“There have been attempts to break us apart. Time and time again, we have been tested. But we have always – by virtue of our patience, acceptance and understanding – emerged victorious.

“Let us once again come together – to do all that we can – and ensure that Malaysia remains as a land of harmony and great opportunities, a nation for which we are so thankful.”

His deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in his message said Christmas celebrations in Malaysia carry a clear message of the importance of tolerance for unity and harmony among the rakyat.

“Freedom of religion in Malaysia is a result of tolerance and mutual respect practised by everyone in the country. With tolerance, people are free to adhere to their own religious beliefs in peace and harmony.

“We could never have achieved inter-religious harmony if not for the mutual respect among those of different religious backgrounds,” he said.

Meanwhile, MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel joined in extending Christmas and New Year greetings to all Malaysians.

“I hope and pray that this season will bring joy, happiness, peace and unity in everyone’s home. While we celebrate this auspicious Christmas, let us not forget the less fortunate. Please give your helping hand to them,” he said.

Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong said Christmas is another opportunity to spread the meaning of togetherness, understanding and love among all.

“I firmly believe that Christmas is another opportunity for us to spread the meaning of togetherness, understanding and love among all,” he said.

Meanwhile, Najib’s Chinese Facebook page “Ah Jib Gor” is giving away 2014 calendars to its fans.

The calendars are a specially designed festival-themed calendar.
